Meg Keoppen Why do they call it Black Friday?

The name gives an ominous flavor to the day...Perhaps we should simply skip the shopping frenzy and find fulfillment in things closer to our hearts. When you want to gift someone or when you need something, look close to home and community. Knowing the story and person behind the thing enriches us all on every level. Buy Nothing Day has a lighter feel. Continue

Meg Keoppen The Winter Season

The short days and chilly weather are natural clues to the winter season moving in. Good weather for warming spicy soups and a hot cinnamon toddy. The stores have decorated for the holidaze and their gift suggestions are pushed to the front. My family always enjoyed homemade gift giving or seeking special items made by someone they knew. I notice that Brenda has some lovely locally made items in the gift catalog for Mountain Meadows Farm CSA. I will be offering a class in early December to show… Continue

Meg Keoppen Speaking of cooperating....

I have a milk goat as a result of looking for milk to buy...and that is certainly great, except that now I am tied to the goat. I want, wish for, am looking for someone or ones to share in this goat keeping thing so I can go away sometimes for this or that. Anyone know how and is willing to sometimes milk a nice gentle goat in trade for milk? Do you know someone who might be willing?! Thanks. Continue

jim hockley water wars?

so the farmers are crying and begging for water, the animals and fish are drinking from drying or polluted rivers and creeks, and millions of californians still have useless shocking green lawns wasting away in the heat and polluting the existing water table with herbicides, insecticides, and fertilizers. meanwhile few people notice the connection. food not lawns. wildlife, not goof courses. get the drift? our cup runneth over...if this wasn't so sad it could be a comedy Continue

i have been trying for decades to get this going but need some help and inspiration. the situation is there's millions of people commuting to jobs or routes when the same opportunities exist right under their noses but they don't realize it. millions of cars on the freeways are crisscrossing each other to provide the same services. these people could be introduced so they could trade jobs or routes where beneficial. the possibilities for reducing the commute significantly exist and this would cl… Continue

Dave Goger What is Community? – Part 1

The term “community” is extremely common today, albeit ambiguous. We have local communities, global communities, ethnic communities, religious communities, special needs communities, online communities and on and on and on. Communities are easier to identify than to define. In fact, we can sense that something is a community even if the constituents haven’t called themselves a community. So what makes a group or aggregate of people a community? I believe a clue to answering this question is emb… Continue

melinda abeles These are the days....

These days have been prophesied by indigenous peoples for thousands of years. The Mayan Calendar for example, speaks of a 26,000 year cycle that ends on December 21,2012. This time we are now in has been called "The Time of Great Purification," " "The Shift of the Ages." It is foretold that the completion brings regeneration of Earth, offering awakening to all open, willing hearts. Many peoples spoke of these last days of the Great Cycle, including the: Maya, Hopi, Egyptians, Kabbalists, Essenes… Continue

Web Team What is Sustainability?

What is Sustainability? "Tug on anything at all and you'll find it connected to everything else in the universe." John Muir The most popular definition of sustainability can be traced to a 1987 UN conference. It defined sustainable developments as those that "meet present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs".* Robert Gillman, editor of the In Context magazine, extends this goal oriented definition by stating "sustainabilityContinue
